Hair is a funny thing – we spend so much of our lives cleaning it, fixing it, and generally obsessing over it. I can’t even tell you how many hair styles I’ve had over the last ten years of my adult life. I was born with relatively thin, fine hair too and I’ve developed a love/hate relationship with my tease brush (thank 6 years of working in television news for that).  It wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized I didn’t have to settle for the thin, oh-so-slow-growing hair that I was born with. Hair extensions opened up a whole new world of hair to me – one where I had long thick locks whenever I felt like it. I toyed with clip-in extensions for the past few years and grew to love the versatility of temporary hair. It wasn’t until last week that I decided to up my hair game – thanks to my gorgeous friend and salon owner, Laurie Carr, at Cirque De Cheveaux in Wheeling.

I wanted to document the process for you all, and give you my complete honest review of my new Great Lengths Hair Extensions. It all starts with a very thorough consultation where every minute detail is customized for your look. From the length and volume of hair, to the different colored strands that are blended together to match your natural hair color. This is where the price is calculated, and is completely tailored to each persons needs. We chose to do about 14 inches in length, slightly shorter than the clip-ins I was wearing before, but manageable enough to wear every day. I went in on a Saturday morning and prepared to be at the salon for at least 3 hours while the extensions were put in. Lucky for me, my hair stylist is great company! The great thing about Great Lengths extensions are the keratin bonds that are made to match our hair structure at the molecular level.  They are tiny – and I mean that – tiny. Compared to any other extensions I’ve worn, (including the small metal bonds) these are so light weight you can’t even feel them. They are also nearly impossible for the unsuspecting eye to detect.

I left with a bag of goodies to help me care for my new hair, and a list of simple instructions to follow. I’ve washed my hair twice in the last week and I can tell you there really isn’t much to caring for these extensions. I use the special brush and make sure to brush through all of my hair morning and night. I use the anti-tap spray on my bonds after I get out of the bath, and then smooth sealed ends all over my hair before taking the blow dryer (on medium heat) to the roots to dry the bonds.

As you can see – the finished product was absolutely beautiful! This picture to the right was taken after I got home from my appointment. She use a deep wave iron to give me beachy waves that I could rock for a few days while I wasn’t able to wash my hair. I’m so happy with how my extensions turned out and I highly recommend Great Lengths to anyone who is considering going through the process. These will last 5 months when taken care of properly, and there is no monthly maintenance. Other types of extensions require the bonds to be pushed up every month, which will set you back $100 each time. These bonds grow out with your hair. I love seeing the before and after photos of people  getting these extensions on the salon’s instagram account.
