A guide to mixing old and new

We took a fun trip to Amish Country a few weeks ago to do some shopping and visit some of my favorite places. The Peddler in Walnut Creek is always the first stop we make! You may remember this post from last year when I took you on a tour of the store.

On my latest visit, I picked up a few new-but-looks-old pieces (c/o of the peddler) and I am showing you how I styled them in my own home. I also picked up a few tips from the experts themselves. Nobody does it better than The Peddler when it comes to mixing old and new. Here’s what they had to say…

“A creative mix of old and new is at the heart of a collected home. When curating a home you love using old and new, consider mixing shapes, colors, patterns and textures to create an eclectic look that is all your own. Layering natural textures, such as leather, faux-fur, wool and linen with worn and aged pieces creates an interesting contrast and a balanced feel. Including new pieces that are made to look old are also a great way to achieve a vintage look. Mixing old and new, or marrying vintage with modern, is what makes our homes unique and creates a modern look which honors the past.”

Isn’t it fun to watch them in action? I try to use these same techniques in my home to create this type of look. I picked up two matching vintage floral prints on my visit to use above my fireplace mantle in our family room. I love the symmetry this creates in the space and the print itself is really well done. They have a gorgeous texture and worn look to them.

I also picked up a long wooden dough bowl. I’ve been wanting one for such a long time, so this is a piece I was really excited to get home and style. The one I chose is a darker brown that adds some contrast and warmth in my all-white space. While this bowl isn’t antique, it sure looks like it could be!

I filled the bowl with moss and placed three large pillar candles inside. This is a super simple but impactful way to style one of these bowls! There is a huge section of these at The Peddler and they come in a lot of different shapes, sizes and wood tones.

The third item I picked up was this “welcome home” sign that I’ve been eyeing for a while! I love how chunky the frame is – giving the appearance of reclaimed wood. I’m using it above the hallway in my entryway because it’s the first thing you see when you come through our front door. I’ve also seen this sign used on a mantle though and it was super cute!

Be sure to follow The Peddler on instagram – their account is always full of inspiration! The dress I’m wearing in these photos is from B Fearless (The Peddler’s sister store next door) and you’ll be seeing more of my shopping haul from there this week too!
